Continence Assessments

Expert advice. Build your confidence. Improve your health.

What is a Continence Assessment?

A continence assessment helps people of all ages who are having problems with bladder or bowel function.

For children, it can help with toilet training and reducing accidents and bedwetting. For adults, it can help with managing urgency, frequency or incontinence, especially for those with neurological disorders, physical disabilities or ageing-related challenges.

Continence Assessment FAQs

A continence assessment is a detailed evaluation by a qualified clinician to identify the causes of urinary or bowel control issues. The assessment considers your medical history, lifestyle factors and functional abilities.

You may benefit from a continence assessment if you experience:

  • Recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Involuntary leaking of urine or faeces
  • A sudden or urgent need to pass urine or stool
  • Difficulty emptying your bladder or bowel fully

Our assessments are performed by a pelvic health physiotherapist with specialist training in pelvic floor function.

We assess and manage:

  • Stress, urge or mixed urinary incontinence
  • Faecal incontinence and bowel dysfunction
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Post-surgical continence issues
  1. Review of your medical and surgical history
  2. Discussion of symptoms, fluid intake and toileting habits
  3. Physical examination of pelvic floor muscle function
  4. Optional bladder diary or pad test
  5. Development of a personalised management plan
  6. Identification and recommendation of any necessary assistive technology
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing
  • Bring any recent bladder diary or notes on fluid intake
  • List your current medications
  • Arrive a few minutes early to complete any paperwork

A typical appointment lasts 45 to 60 minutes, allowing time for discussion, examination and introduction to your initial treatment plan.

Most private health funds provide rebates for physiotherapy or allied health incontinence services—please check your level of cover. NDIS participants may be eligible under core or capacity-building supports; we can assist with funding enquiries. Contact us to discuss your situation.
